Training the Core

Personal Fitness

What Are the Core Muscles?

Different experts include different muscles in their list, but in general the muscles of the core run the length of the trunk and torso. Your core muscles are the ones that help stabilise your body and keep your posture correct.

If you have a bad back or poor core strength Pete is adept at showing his clients a range of great core exercises to give you a strong core and a flat stomach to boot!

Many clients, when you first mention the objective and benefits of training the core immediately think of focusing purely on the abdominal muscles or ‘abs’. However, don’t confuse an ab routine with a core workout. A true core workout program develops dozens of muscles attached to the hips, pelvis, lower back, and abdominals.

Why else is a strong core important? Well, a strong core is essential to correctly perform strength training exercises, to lift a maximum amount of weight and to reduce your risk of injuries. Pete always clearly explains to his clients the reasons for a particular exercise or repetition – the best core exercises may surprise you!

You can perform core strength training exercises on a carpeted floor or mat. Breathe freely and deeply during each exercise. Focus on tightening your deepest abdominal muscle (transversus abdominis) and the one you feel contracting when you cough.
